Avian influenza (AI) – also known as ‘bird flu’ – remains a hot topic, with outbreaks and active restrictions continuing across Europe. According to a recent scientific report 867 outbreaks of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) Virus were reported between September and December 2021 (1).
Influenza strains are classified by their haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N) surface proteins. There are 16 subtypes of haemagglutinin and 9 subtypes of neuraminidase, giving rise to the classic influenza nomenclature – H1N1 and so on. HPAI strains are always H5 or H7. The epidemiology of Influenza Viruses is complex. They evolve constantly by a combination of genetic mutation and reassortment and the emergence of new strains can pose a significant threat to animal and human health.
When faced with an outbreak, veterinarians need to be able to test for and identify AI strains rapidly and efficiently, providing critical information on whether a strain is notifiable and the next steps they should take.

Today INDICAL is taking the first step into food safety and antimicrobial resistance segments by joining forces with Check-Points.
Check-Points is a Dutch R&D focused company that produces tests for two principal markets – food safety and human antimicrobial resistance. The main component of the business is related to “Check and Trace”, a unique product based on a microarray platform to accurately identify over 300 serotypes of Salmonella. The company, founded in 2002 with annual revenues of approximately EUR 2.3 million, also produces a number of DNA-based tests for the molecular detection of antimicrobial resistance in hospital acquired infections in humans.
Through the Salmonella test, the company principally serves producers and labs within the poultry industry as well as food safety labs. The human assays principally target in-hospital laboratories.

AeroCollect® works by pulling a flow of air through a small sample chamber. When collecting samples, high voltage is applied to the test chamber. This creates an electric field across the sample chamber that captures and concentrates bacteria, viruses, and other microscopic particles in the sample chamber. The sample chamber is then sent to the laboratory where the content is analysed for pathogens using a qPCR analysis. The results are ready within one to two hours.
